Great story, fiction wrapped around fact, and I certainly learned a lot more about the Roman invasion of Britain than I was ever taught in school. I read this book a long time ago and have worked through to finishing the sixth in the series. Each book kept me totally absorbed. My husband, not a real book lover, has just finished Hero of Rome; he couldn't put it down and is now starting on the second, Defender of Rome. The whole series is highly recommended for those whose interest lies in both history and likeable heroes.

Jackson has created an interesting and likable Character whose thoughts, travels and actions hold readers' interest and stretch page-turning tension. The action is quick and bloody, the women interesting, and the story line full of detail. Want to understand what makes a Roman Legionnaire the finest fighter and battle-winner in ancient history? "Soldier of Rome" is good historical fiction dealing with the British uprising against the Roman Empire of the Emperor Nero's time. Led by a charismatic British Queen Boudicca, this was the biggest uprising by the Britons against Roman domination. There is an interesting sub-plot involving a romance between the main protagonist, Valerius, and a young British-Celtic maiden, Maeve that is quite well done.

My main criticism of this novel is its dark and depressing nature. Roman rule of Britain is shown to be starkly unjust due to the avarice of the Emperor Nero and his agents. The British subjects evidently have no rights whatever, and the Romans delight in rubbing their noses in this. The result is the uprising. Without giving much away, the author discards important characters in this story with abandon, which makes it hard to stay interested in the story or, of course, interested in the characters. Read the novel and you will likely see what I mean. Nonetheless this is an interesting and readable novel that retained my interest throughout. RJB.
I read a lot of historical fiction and have read a number of series set in Ancient Rome. This is one of the better ones, with a good cast of characters and a complex, compelling main character (“hero”). The story and plot are also engaging with interesting details I plan to continue reading this series.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The main character is a likeable guy, and those around him are believable. Sometimes there are 'gory things' that are explained in perhaps too great of detail. But that is a personal thing. The author goes into great depth to immerse you in the time period of the story. Without giving anything away, I really enjoyed the interactions of the main character and the auxilia cavalry units towards the end of the book.
I had never heard of Douglas Jackson and his Rome series, but took advantage of 's low-price offer, as I have always been interested in stories of Ancient Rome.
So glad I did, this is an excellent read. The book goes into great detail regarding the composition of the Roman legions, and the author also paints a vivid picture of ancient Britain and the brutal, savage manner of that age. However, the detailed descriptions do not hinder the flow of the book.
I intend to follow up the tales of Gaius Valerius Verrens.
Loved the book. I was not sure first, but I liked the main character and the story line, very well written as well. Also, Romans were the invaders, there is nothing to like about them, right? At the same time, they are human beings, following the orders, making money, having feelings, families, and pride in who they were. Then the Celts and how they dealth with being taken over the Roman empire, they struggle to fight the oppressor with vengence, blood and brutality. I am glad I did not live in those times. The descriptions of soldiers' camps, their lives, and the battles were great. The pace is fast and it is a very intersting and good read. I believe I am going to read the next one.
My first Douglas Jackson novel which I picked for the subject matter. Not bad but it had some flaws from my stand point. First the pluses. The characters are developed well although a little to predictable. Second the descriptions of the town's and the lay of the land was done well although I would love to see more towards the end of the book. The way honor is played up on both sides especially that of the veterans I believe captured a true sense of belief. What did not like in the story was it was to predictable. I know it's history and it's not easy not to be but in the characters movements were to easy to predict. A battle sciences were well thought out but way to fast in there execution within the story. This especially true for the last major battle which was a tremendous victory in reality. Lastly some terms bothered me especially when the word spear was being used in relation of the pilum. The pilum was a javelin not a spear and a Roman would not call it a spear. All in all its worth a read to pass time.
