I’m not generally a fan of murder mysteries, but I am a fan of Jane Austen, and it was SUCH a delight to sink into the familiar prose and comfortable world of characters with all their foibles, and then the next thing you knew I was eagerly turning the pages to see what we would find out next! Ms. Grossack has produced quite a wonder here, with her feel for Jane Austen and her ability to recreate that world, and her imagination in adding a little twist of her own to keep us guessing. A pure delight! Thank you to her, and enjoy!Product details

The Meryton Murders A Mystery Set in the Town of Jane Austen Pride Prejudice edition by Victoria Grossack Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Good mystery story using Austen's P&P characters. Mystery easily figured out in my opinion so it dragged a bit for me. Liked author's writing in P&P vernacular; however there were some failures e.g. Darcy is written as extremely boring as are most of the male characters. SPOILER I found Lizzie's character to be a little uneven. For example, someone else has to point out possible best use of funds possibly coming her way at end of story. As she is already extremely rich, I would have thought her character would show a more altruistic bent, especially towards Mr Jones (the younger).
I didn't know if I would like this book. Even after purchasing I didn't read for awhile because I am leery of other authors continuing the Pride and Prejudice story. This book by Ms. Grossack was well written and engaging. I really enjoyed it. I hope it becomes available in audible books in the near future.
"The Meryton Murders" by Victoria Grossack was and interesting take on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." I'm always surprised at the number of P&P take-offs are out there. I don't read a lot of them but this one seemed to stay true to the original characters better than others I've read. I do find it a little humorous when one of these books contains a murder as Austen was very clear that she was not interested in writing about such things. The author writes a murder mystery well which, if you haven't tried it, is not easy. I never try to guess at who the murderer is when I read a bok like this and was a little surprised when the culprit was revealed.
What a wonderful twist on the Pride and Prejudice theme. The author actually acknowledges that she took her basic premises from Jane Austen and expanded them instead of moving the characters around at will. For a while I was afraid she would make Lydia an innocent bystander, but it was good that her character really did not change at all. She and Wickham truly deserve each other.
The plot was good although one might wonder why people didn't look more closely at all the newcomers to town once the dead bodies began piling up. And couldn't anyone figure out that Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Ford might be the same person? Charlotte only had to insist on a meeting.
I look forward to reading her other mysteries.
Austenations are a guilty pleasure of mine, but I find that I've read so many of them that I now need some sort of 'hook' to really enjoy one. A straight sequel or retelling doesn't do it for me anymore. In this one, the 'hook' is that it's a murder mystery. The characters and circumstances all seemed adequately Austen, and the mystery was fairly interesting, although I was a good half-step ahead of the characters most of the time. Not unusual for me with mysteries and I don't hold that against them. I have read the author's previous Austenation (based on Emma) and I enjoyed it as well. I'd be happy to see her write one for all of Austen's books.
This is a fun read and holds your attention all the way through. Lots of twists and turns and not at all predictable. It prompted me to go back and reread Pride and Prejudice. The Meryton Murders is a nice logical continuation of that classic by Jane Austin. I highly recommend this book, well written and I think Jane Austin would approve of Victoria Grossack's writing style and plot!
I have read all of Victoria's books and enjoyed each and every one of them. I am eagerly awaiting her next addtion to the Tapestry in Bronze series.
I enjoyed this book, and I think other Austen lovers will too. It is fast-paced, funny, and the characters sound and act just like they did in the original. They have moved on, though, from the end of P&P. Jane is expecting her first child, and Elizabeth is dealing with the awkwardness of being much richer than nearly everyone she knows. Then it becomes more than awkward as she is the target of blackmail. As in P&P, Darcy and Elizabeth are separated for much of the story, but this is a mystery, not a romance, and I was happy to see how happy they are together. Darcy does get to save the day, arriving at just the right moment on a galloping horse (although he was coming for another reason). A treat for those who like P&P!
I’m not generally a fan of murder mysteries, but I am a fan of Jane Austen, and it was SUCH a delight to sink into the familiar prose and comfortable world of characters with all their foibles, and then the next thing you knew I was eagerly turning the pages to see what we would find out next!
