I was anxious to try this new author after all of the 5 star reviews. I was totally caught off guard with the level of detailed/graphic violence toward children in this book. I am the type that will avoid a book if children or animals suffer. Yes, I know it isn't a true story, but I don't even want to allow the images into my head. I am always looking for a good book in the thriller genre, but this was over the top. As you can tell from my review, it is hard to say good things about the storyline because I am overwhelmed with the graphic violence (sexual and physical). If the author writes a book that doesn't include such graphic detail of abuse and murder, I would like to try again.Tags : First Night of Summer [Landon Parham] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. An Overall Top 25 Amazon Kindle Bestseller

WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES, a father discovers that a journey of misfortune is sometimes the path to deliverance.

The quaint mountain town of Ruidoso,Landon Parham,First Night of Summer,Valiant Books,0988802511,small town,serial killer,crime fiction,mountian,revenge,FICTION Psychological,Fiction : Suspense,FictionThrillers - Suspense,Psychological,Thrillers - Suspense,Fiction - Psychological Suspense,Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945)
First Night of Summer Landon Parham 9780988802513 Books Reviews
Read this book for the art of the prose and for awareness, not for pure entertainment.
Since the beginning, mankind has told stories for a number of reasons—to pass down history, to inform, to entertain, to offer warnings. Yet, even when the story's primary purpose is not escape or amusement, we still do our best to make it entertaining. Otherwise, who would listen?
First Night of Summer is one of those stories. This story is a warning, a call to awareness, that is written with substantive literary skill and packed into a narrative that will make you laugh, cry, and cringe because you care deeply about the characters.
Obviously the author is passionate in his belief that families must be aware of—and guard against—the danger of child abduction, for he goes to great lengths to provide realism that will demand your attention. However, there is a line that it appears he is unwilling to cross. While he describes the abductions and the abhorrent violence leading up to the terrible peak of the crime, he stops short of describing the act itself. Yes, the violence will make you cringe. If you are a parent, it will also stir within you a sense of vigilance that you are unlikely to ever forget. I would much rather gain that from a story than from personal experience, and without the author's descriptions—tied to characters you care about—you are unlikely to have such a profound effect.
Leaving the subject matter aside, the art of the prose is truly a thing to behold. Landon Parham is truly gifted and I would love to read more of his work.
I confess, I haven't finished it . . . yet. I intend to do so, though. A few words of advice from mid-way through TAKE HEED OF THE REVIEWS, especially the ones about violence, cruelty and brutality against children. It's there and in enough detail to make me, a true crime reader, feel the horror.
It's not 'graphic', exactly, in that the author doesn't get to the granular level of depicting every physical move and touch of the child rapist. But it's descriptive enough with a few phrases that capture the horror, the violation, the pain, that I can't read it in bed before sleeping.
In spite of that or because of that, it's well-written and has a good plot. Here's where my mixed feelings really cause me a problem I can't think of how to adequately categorize the 'good' aspects of the book. Enjoyable, engrossing, interesting . . . apply but don't. It's not a train wreck of a book. The characters are well-defined and real. I like ones I'm supposed to. The author has done an excellent job of fleshing out the entire cast of characters without bogging down, which is a skill. The storyline is well-defined and flows evenly. The editing, hallelujah, is tight and correct (with one glaring exception, which I'll note).
I've read every word through three child abductions/rapes/murders. From here on out, though, I'll read up to the point of the abduction and then skip through until that part is over. I don't mean this to be a criticism of the author's choice to include and not gloss over the violence; without it, the book wouldn't be as strong. I don't avoid these subjects because I know they exist and I'm trusting that the predator won't escape in the end, even though that's what happens all too often in real life.
Glaring exception mute vs moot. A point is NOT "mute", it is "moot". That jumped right off the page and into my grammar police file.
This read is a parent's worst nightmare!
First Night of Summer is a disturbing and terrifying psychological thriller about a sadistic child predator who has an obsession for stalking and abducting young girls for his sexual gratification, from torturing, raping and murdering his young victims. First Night of Summer brings awareness to all parents and caregivers of children, to never get too comfortable in your own surroundings. Never take the environment that you live in for granted because, you just never know who's watching you and your family.
Landon Parham takes you through every emotion a parent can possibly feel. Parham's uncomfortable depth of realism will keep you on the edge of your seat and will make you want to keep your children and grandchildren closer, for sure.
Landan Parham's brilliant writing style raise awareness of how easily a life can be disrupted and torn apart by evil that lives among us all.
All in all, I am glad I hung in there and read First Night of Summer. It was a tough and emotional read. I feel terrible for any family that has to endure this kind of horrific tragedy in their life.
I would recommend this book to parents and grandparents alike.
