Legacy Code Legacy Code Saga Volume 1 Autumn Kalquist Books
This is a fascinating story that is a combination of science fiction, thriller and mystery. It has a real Battlestar Galactica (BSG) feel to it, more like the original series than the new, were it had gritty realism as opposed to flashy special effects. It seems all that is left of the species is 12 star ships worth humans, trying to find a ‘Better World’. Each of the 12 ships serves its own purpose, producing food, clothing, fuel etc (much like BSG).
The most interesting, and somewhat scary aspect of Autumn Kalquist’s books is the enemy. The main enemy of this series is Humanity itself, much like Battlestar. Although in BSG they fought the Cylons, and in Legacy, it seems they are constantly fighting a lot of elements, the story itself delves into the issues that plague humans, trust, greed, power, all of these things are explored, and we see how each of these things are having an impact on the remnants of humanity, and the main characters. Kalquist does a fantastic job of exploring each of these qualities within her characters, and within the populace as a whole, and we see how these things have manifested over time, allowing for different castes to be set up on the ship, for the Powerful to dominate the Weak, and, how the Weak are finally beginning to rebel.
Much of this book takes place on the main ship, ‘The Paragon’, where the leadership of the fleet live, and follows Era and Dritan Corinth. Era is pregnant, and about to find out about her baby, whether it will be a defect, and it is here that we start to learn about ‘The Legacy Code’ and where most of the babies born to the fleet are born with ‘The Defect’ and have to be terminated. This ties in with the short stories written by Autumn Kalquist, ‘318’ and ‘Decode’, set back on Earth that give us a bit of history about what has occurred previously, and about the outbreak of the super immunity bug that started to infect and kill children. We also learn that Humanity has fled Earth to try and find a new home, as Earth is basically unliveable now, mainly due to the plague, and this is all that remains of humanity.
And this is where the story gets really interesting. There are terrorists on-board the Paragon, and early on in the story, they blow a hole in the ship. There are investigations. I don’t want to give anything major away, so no spoilers, but with Dritan involved in the work crews, mystery’s involved around the Defect and Era’s baby, the different castes on the ship all in turmoil, the terrorist threat to the ship, plus several other plots I won’t even mention…
This book is incredibly fast paced and difficult to put down, there is a lot going on, with outstanding storylines, and exceptional, well developed characters, this is a story that is not to be missed.
Autumn Kalquist does an exceptional job of building the intrigue and keeping you going, as well as introducing new storylines just to keep things interesting and engaging.
This is a great Sci-Fi read, as well as anyone who loves a good thriller, especially if you are a fan of BSG, this is a must!

Legacy Code Legacy Code Saga Volume 1 Autumn Kalquist Books Reviews
Autumn Kalquist really knows how to put the 'dys-' in 'dystopia'! All of her books are about a very bleak and dark future that feels like it is certainly in the realm of possibility, but I sure hope not. A small number of corporations have taken over Earth, and humankind has managed to ravage our planet and ruin the biosphere through a series of unwise genetic manipulation. The first series of books and short stories, the Fractured Era, deal with the destruction of plants, animals and humans on Earth. The second series, the Fractured Era Legacy, takes place 300 years in the future, where a fleet of spaceships that escaped Earth continue to wander through space, trying to find a new home.
I found these series to be well-written, and very inventive and interesting reading. One good sign of a good series is that I found myself unsatisfied whenever I came up against the end of a book or short story. And that is my complaint; 'Fractured' could also be used to describe the confusing and disjointed path that these stories take. You would need to go to the author's website to try to figure out the timeline The Fractured Series includes (in chronological order) the short stories 'Decode' and '318', followed by 'Defective'. The Fractured Legacy Series consists of 'Better World', 'Legacy Code', and Paragon'. To make it even more confusing, you can buy all 3 of these stories in one book from ; 'Legacy', which is described as, "Book 1" in the series. As of today, Book 2 does not exist. It is unclear when any new stories will come out, other than Kalquist letting us know on her website that she has "a lot of notes". So, I read them in the wrong order, which is not terrible, but it would have helped if I had figured the timeline out sooner. But worse, both series end rather abruptly, signifying that there is more to come, but who knows when? I would have felt a lot better if at least Autumn Kalquist was able to map out a plan for releasing titles in the future, but she hasn't. So, I'm left hanging, wondering if and/or when I will learn more about some of the intriguing characters that haunt this scary future scenario.
I was completely blown away by this adult dystopian novel, in which the remnants of humankind have fled earth in a fleet of spaceships looking for a new home. The survivors genes have been corrupted by the Legacy Code, a well-intentioned genetic modification designed to boost immunity to disease. Unfortunately, the modification has caused half of all fetuses to possess the Defect which they cannot survive.
This is a terrific concept in and of itself, and it is made even better by the excellent writing, pacing, and interesting characters. The society invokes shades of Nazism and Stalinism with political undesirables and the seditious killed as "traitors". Resources are for the healthy and living.
I can only describe the ending as cruel because it ended on an extreme cliffhanger. I wanted, no needed, to know what happened and immediately bought the next book and began reading.
I urge everyone to read this book – you will not be disappointed.
Incidentally, if you sign up for the author’s mailing list on her website, you will get a short story prequel for free. I have to say that this is excellent marketing, because after reading it (318), I was dying to learn even more about the events prior to the exodus from Earth and will read that series as soon as I finish the next Legacy novel.
