I wanted to be a distance god. There. I said it. I would've broken out of the lead pack and surged away, thrown down some impossible splits, devastated the elites as I stretched my lead, merciless, alone...almost floating. The field would've strung out and withered behind me as I burned and buried the best runners on the face of the planet. I would've become immortal. Was that too much to ask? See, running consumed me—sometimes like love, sometimes like cancer.
Wannabe Distance God The Thirst Angst and Passion of Running in the Chase Pack eBook Timothy Tays
Author Timothy M. Tays Phd speaks with such passion of his desire to become an Olympic Distance Runner. I really connected with the book, one because I know Tim personally because we went to High School together and I ran on the girls track team while he was running on the guys team, but also because the underlining story he tells about the way he was raised. His mother, like mine, felt that all illnesses were a part of faulty thinking. Therefore we both grew up without the help of doctor visits, dental visits or medicine. His case was more extreme however. I was intrigued as I read the book by the thoughts of a youthful male mind and more by Tim's hindsight, as a Clinical Psychologist, into the need to run all out! Great Read!!!Product details

Wannabe Distance God The Thirst Angst and Passion of Running in the Chase Pack eBook Timothy Tays Reviews
Hard to put down. Tim Tays courageously tells his story of trying to be the best runner that he could be. Candid and brutally honest with a great sense of humor.
A wonderful read of a special journey. I recommend this book to anyone a runner or non runner, just an amazing journey . One of the best books on running I have read !!
- gary fanelli 1988 Olympian ( Marathon )
I bought this for my husband who is also a wannabe distance god. He found it a great read for someone who has spent his life pursuing an unattainable goal, and finding peace with that in middle age. Not many people understand that passion, but if you do, this book is for you.
I ran at the University of Kansas several years after Tays did, so much of the book resonated with me because I recognized the scenery. But I think anyone with a passion for running will enjoy it. It reminded me of "Once a Runner" in some respects, simply because I found myself nodding my head at so many of the joys and disappoinments that he writes about. They're the same emotions felt by many of us who've enjoyed and endured the highs and lows of running. Written in a conversational and very witty style. A very enjoyable read.
A great book that I have recommended to all my friends that wanted desperately to be "a god" in a sport but were relegated to "he's pretty good" no matter how much extra work we put in. Tim explores the psychology of trying to break free of the "chase pack" and taste the rarified air of the "gods"...
This book brought back many memories of KU, the West Coast Saloon and most of all my faltering "running career". I was in the chase pack in high school and longed to catch the likes of Tim Schmidt. (who was a "distance god" to me) No matter how hard I worked, my job was to just score points, and never to be in the lead. My only consolation was, that while he was winning the State Individual Cross Country title, my school was winning the team title. I would have traded that in a second to be a "Distance God"... just once.......
As I read this book I almost felt like I was reading my biography!
I was born the same year and had similar dreams related to running - I just lacked Tim's talent!!
But I loved to run, I loved to compete and I was always striving to be better - and I was always trying to understand myself - which I seldom could.
I left the sport for awhile but then found it again - and again, I often question myself, my motivations and why I have to run.
This was a great read - one I didn't want to end.
Thank you for pouring yourself out in your writing - it actually helped me understand myself some!!!
Tim Tays sat down and wrote an unflinching look at his running life, Wannabe Distance God The Thirst, Angst, and Passion of Running in the Chase Pack. Covering his evolution as a school boy phenom, to his years as a Kansas Jayhawk, and beyond, to the injury that derailed his hopes of cracking that last upper elite, Wannabe Distance God touches poignantly on the desire, disappointment, and acceptance of young man's struggle to match his own expectations.
Tays lays it out in straightforward prose and unexpected self-deprecating humor. Worthy of your time, you'll find that your mind drifts back often to consider stories that he writes about long after you close the cover.
When I finished this book I sat quietly for a while and just thought Wow! This book resonated so strongly for me. I am in my 50's as is the author, and it felt like when I read Catcher in the Rye as a teenager. that's not to say they are the same, just the emotion I felt reading it.
Apart from wanting to be a running god in the 80's as well, and not even coming close to the level of success the author achieved, I have little in common with the writer. Yet despite that every chapter, every tale, every page said something. I imagine this book couldn't have been written until now, requiring time and experience to put events into perspective, and as such it becomes much more than a memoir by an athlete - much much more.
The religious upbringing, the death of his mother at an early age, the bullying, the brain farts (his words) and the disappointments and ultimate injury that killed his running are riveting as they are sometimes heartbreaking to read.
In the end the author has found a peace and reconciled his career and approach to life that I admire and congratulate. Perhaps that's why the book resonated so strongly for me. More than just about running in the 80's when we all wanted to be going head-to-head with Salazar, Durden or Deek (I am Australian), this book is about growing old gracefully and finding meaning in our lives. And perhaps putting meaning into our lives.
Well done Tim Tays on a wonderful, wonderful book. Thank you for the pleasure of allowing us to read it and what a fine legacy to your family and friends.
